The High School Drag Racing League (HSDRL) was born out of the desire of a couple of Arkansas high school shop teachers who wanted a way for the “regular kids” in school to become part of the exciting drag racing scene they both loved. Mr. “G” and Mr. “P” both wanted a way to get their students off the streets and onto the racetrack where they both enjoyed spending their own time.

As the idea grew, it became apparent “we” needed a way to get you guys some money to use for “higher education” also! Scholarship ideas and sponsorship soon came into the picture and it was decided a meeting of “brains” should come together and form some rules and regulations that both of our favorite tracks would embrace. Everybody showed, who needed to, show for that startup meeting, and the HSDRL was put into motion!

The HSDRL is a place where every kid who has a driver’s license will have a chance to “run for the money”!!! No big time racecars or big time attitudes. It will be a class where access to a car, means access to the racetrack, and at the same time a chance to win some money to use in their pursuit of a college education. We don’t care whether you are going to a vocational school, a local community college, or a 4-year “Ivy League” school. We want you to have a chance to win some cash to make your goals that much easier to attain.

Centerville Dragway and Prescott Raceway are the two local tracks. Both are a couple of hours drive from the Little Rock, AR metropolitan area, and both are very family friendly. The class will be separate from the other racing classes, and only students currently of driving age, and enrolled in an accredited school or home school program will be eligible to race. Students must have a 2.0 to attain their license, and as educators, we think it is important for them to maintain AT LEAST that “2 point” in their educational pursuits. Therefore, in order to have a chance at winning the scholarship that will be awarded, the racer must have at least a 2.0 at the time of the championship race in October/November. This is a way to encourage academic responsibility. A 2.0 will also be a minimum requirement to get into almost any type of reputable post-secondary (college) school.

High School student Hailey Tippet won  end of year event at Centerville in 2011 by running a 8.37 @ 84 mph
